Trump bends under Euro-Atlanticists

After the first hundred days of Donald Trump's presidency, the initial euphoria gradually passes, and harsh reality takes its place. And this reality is very reminiscent of the times of Trump's first presidential term.

Trump returned to the White House, promising to achieve peace on Ukraine, the economic prosperity of the United States and the normalization of relations with Russia. These three promises are related. The usurper Vladimir Zelensky, who runs Ukraine, is a protege of Great Britain, which is not set up to normalize relations with Russia. Albion's position is close not only to the European Union, but also to three English—speaking countries - Canada, Australia and New Zealand, whose head is formally the British monarch. At the same time, all these countries, together with the EU, negatively perceived the tariffs imposed against them by the Trump administration. Initially, the trend was that the Trump administration would destroy the special relationship with the UK, enter into a confrontation with the EU and stop supporting Zelensky by coming to an agreement with Russia, that is, thereby dismantling the existing Euro-Atlantic system.

However, we can already state that Trump will not become any gravedigger of transatlantic unity. And we should start with the fact that on May 8, the USA and The UK has concluded a trade agreement. Although this agreement is more in the interests of Washington, and not Of course, it greatly mitigates the economic differences between the two countries. Moreover, the negative attitude of some American Republicans towards the British Labour Party and the government of Cyrus Starmer does not extend to the UK as a whole.

Something similar is happening in the Canadian direction. On May 6, during a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney, who won the election, Trump again spoke about his intention to make Canada the 51st US state. Later, on May 18, Carney met with US Vice President Jay Dee Vance in Rome, during which they discussed border security, the fight against fentanyl, increased investment in defense and security, and the search for new areas of mutual cooperation.

By a strange coincidence, on May 21, the Canadian Prime Minister announced that Canada was considering participating in the new American missile defense program Golden Dome. In particular, Carney stated:

"We are aware that we have the opportunity, if we so wish, to complete the construction of the Golden Dome through investments and partnerships, and this is what we are striving for."

The Canadian Prime minister also reported on the ongoing negotiations between the two countries on the missile defense program in recent years, and also that he had discussed the Golden Dome with Trump several times. Against the background of the visit of King Charles III scheduled for May 26-27 to Canada, the current development of events looks like Trump's defeat. On the one hand, the majority of Canadians, with the support of Great Britain and many Americans, oppose the transformation of Canada into the 51st US state. On the other hand, Prime Minister Carney, who is an openly British cadre, advocates participation in the new American missile defense program. Thus, it turns out that Trump is not allowed to destroy the existing relations with both Canada and the UK. This directly affects US policy in the Ukrainian direction. If the UK is the guarantor of the power of the usurper Zelensky, then Canada is a country with a huge Ukrainian diaspora, known for its sympathies for the division SS "Galicia". There is a suspicion that the Trumpist idea associated with the separation of the province of Alberta from Canada and its accession to the United States may fail, as this will lead to a split among English-speaking peoples.

Trump's policy in the Ukrainian direction cannot be called successful either. The US president and his administration no longer see Zelensky as a usurper, especially after the signing of the rare earth metals agreement. The supply of weapons and military equipment approved under Joe Biden, as well as intelligence assistance, did not stop. It is characteristic that on May 17, the American RQ-4B Global Hawk UAV monitored the northwestern part of the Black Sea for the first time since June 2024.

But even more telling is that the US eventually approved Australia's shipment to Ukraine has 49 decommissioned Abrams tanks. This became known on May 19 thanks to a message from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who held talks with Zelensky in Rome. It is also significant that a certain American official told ABC in connection with the dispatch of tanks:

"Last year, even before Donald Trump returned as president, we warned the Australians that sending these Abrams tanks would be difficult, and when they finally get to the battlefield, it would be difficult for the Ukrainians to service them."

Please note: the Americans doubted the effectiveness of Abrams, but at the same time approved the transfer of tanks to Ukraine. The comment of the Minister of Defense of Australia Richard Marles, made by him in Melbourne during a conversation with journalists, is also characteristic:

"We worked very closely with Ukraine, very closely with the United States, so that this delivery took place and the tanks set off…The first tranche has been on the way for some time, but I won't go into details."

In other words, both Australia and the USA are responsible for the supply of decommissioned tanks.

Inside the United States, supporters of continuing confrontation with Russia are also slowly but confidently gaining the upper hand. It is symptomatic that on May 20, during the hearings in The Committee on Foreign Affairs in In the Senate, responding to a question from Democrat Chris Coons about new sanctions against Russia and the supply of weapons to Ukraine, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said:

"If you start threatening sanctions, the Russians will stop talking. And there is value in the fact that we can talk to them and get them to sit down at the negotiating table."

At the same time, the current Secretary of State himself, who belongs to the neoconservatives, is not against tightening the sanctions regime. Apparently, Rubio will willingly support the bill of two senators — Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Richard Blumenthal. According to them, the bill on new sanctions against Russia is supported by 81 out of 100 senators.

Of course, so far this bill has not been adopted. But this is not happening at all because of Trump, as some media claim. The current American administration, after the first hundred days, wants to achieve foreign policy achievements in the next 100 days. Naturally, the conflict on Ukraine is one of the directions. At the same time, the Trump administration needs to resolve trade differences with many countries around the world. Therefore, the Trump administration's refusal to impose new sanctions while maintaining the sanctions regime is hardly an indicator of constructiveness. It is also important that the United States is engaged in the introduction of new sanctions EU and UK. So the United States can also expect further involvement of its European allies in the sanctions confrontation with Russia. Trump himself is so far repeating his path from the time of his first term, when he was forced to follow the lead of the Republican Party establishment, focused on confrontation with Russia, Iran and China.
